My brother-in -law got married down in the Brazilian State of Rio Grade do Sul. We went down and spend 10 days with my wife's family. These are some selections from my sketchbook of the city of Pelotas, which is abundant in 19th century architecture, interesting sculptures and ornate fountains. I hope you can read my small and antiquated handwriting.

Does anyone else hate how photos and scans of paintings just sap the life out of your work? I guess that means I didn't do my job as an illustrator, one of my teachers once told me that it should look better in the reproduction. Oh well, next time I guess.

Anyway, this was a quick 24 hour painting I did as a commission. Since I haven't put up a painting in awhile, I thought I share this with you all. It's a picture of James Madison writing the Constitution.

Thanks to my friend Houston I have to start posting again.( He apparently represents the masses) I've been busy with assignments, art related both art related and not. This is a sketch for some freelance work, but they're not going to use this one, so I figured I'd let people see it cause it's not going to be published with the rest.

Well, I know I haven't posted in a good while. I had to pretty much abandon the blog for a month or so because my wife had school and work, so i had to take more complete dominion of domestic engineering and tending to my daughter. In fact she's on my lap right now making sure I can't type.

Any who, I thought that a(n) heroic farmer in harvest mode would be good end of summer fare. I hope you enjoy. oh, and if you can name the artist and the painting I primarily ripped off, I'll send you a cookie.

We ate at Steak n' Shake last night. Our waiter was a charming fellow, that bore a striking resemblance to a young Bill Nye. My wife thought other wise.

Anyway this is my vision of an elf-like waiter at a 50's diner.

A friendly forest tavern, where a weary traveler can find a pint of ale, a hearty meal and welcomed nights rest. I really want to do a painting of a place like this.

Contrary to popular belief I do occasionally draw environments, just not as often as people. I should work on it more though, broaden the old horizons and such.

This one took me about 53 minutes, I know because I was on the phone with my parents at the time and finished when I hung up. It said I'd been talking for 53 minutes, so I guess that's how long it took me. Hi Mom and Dad!

What's this!? A still life, fine art posted on my blog for Illustration Friday?

Yes it is so, I was having a craving for Oranges and thought that my painting would fit nicely. I was also craving to tell everyone about my brand new ( well not so new) Daily Painting Blog, M.SCOTT IS DAILY PAINTING.

It's the radical fine art wing of my vast syndacate of art maddness. I've been doing the daily sketch here on my blog, and discovered that there are daily painters out there. I thought that I'd give it a try and so far so good. I probably won't do it every day, but I'll try.

Oh don't worry I'll still do my daily sketch.

And now for something completely different. I know this is a departure from my normal fare for the daily sketch. I simply had not done a figure study in a while. I get rusty in my life drawing as everyone does. I remembered why I never draw in pencil though, I always smudge it up and I never get the dark values nthat I like, so next time it's pen and ink for me

The goddess Athena was sure that Arachne would adapt very well to her new form.

This is actually a very small piece 5x5 that I did a while ago, but only finished completely yesterday. I like to work small.
